Dean Calderon Seminar

Dieter and I (and Geoff) had the opportunity to attend a Dean Calderon seminar with his breeder this past weekend. Nora J went to the inlaws for some serious couch sleeping and R&R.

Got to hang out with Dieter's mom Jewel and see many of the similarities that she has past on to her wild red coloured offspring. Including annoying nasal whining, messiest water drinkers ever and laying in crate with front legs crossed.

Since all of the saved images of myself and Dieter are in video format and I am not so skilled at uploading those efficiently, here is a photo of Jewel and Jason doing some heeling. Jewel is quite a firecracker.

A Few of the Many Points on Dog Training:
- "Bring-Hier-Sitz" (BHS)
- 4 Points of Heeling - a) standing fuss b) movement fuss c) turning fuss d) hier to fuss
- Its not the tool, its he who works the tool
- Handler must not be lazy with their dog
- In protection a dog must work with 100% of his Prey Drive and 100% of his Defense Drives
- Practice movements/positioning WITHOUT your dog before practicing them with your dog
- Your dog should be very clear about what IS correct and NOT correct
- If you train in Germany for long enough, what one english speaking NA individual might say as "out your dog, and kick the sleeve" Dean says "make out, and kick the sleeve"

I had a fantastic day and felt as though we barely scratched the surface. I hope to attend another seminar in the future and hopefully stay for a little longer.

Dean hosts an intense seminar with loads of time spent with each team and has an eye that does not miss anything. He reads dogs and their handlers extremely well. He was a pleasure to train with.

As I read on his website prior to attending "open your heart and your eyes to your dog and he will tell you how to train him. There are many paths to the top of the mountain."
