A) He gets a decent cardio workout which then leads to increased time sleeping for him :-)
B) He is preparing for his AD title
C) We cover a lot more ground then a walk and thus it is more interesting for me
D) I get exercise
So we have been out a handful of times. First couple times I only walked beside the bike with him. He is a bit nervous of it being so close to him at times and really has no street sense about where he should be around it, so we have laid some basic groundwork.
I am currently using my husbands bike which definitely does not consider the comfort of my rear end. Geoff rides on this seat that I can assure you, is definitely not a gel seat. However if this becomes something Dieter and I grow keen on - perhaps Santa will bring me a bike for Christmas or something....just gotta make sure it has a comfortable seat!
So we have progressed to the point where I will hold him via a leash with my right hand and drive the bike with my left. The biggest consideration being to ensure he does not lunge, which would definitely result in a trip in the ditch I am certain. By maintaining a loose, but short lead, I am able to have fairly decent control of him. He also is learning "whoooaa" means we are going to slow down.
All is all, I hope to teach him some sort of biking repertoire with commands equating to left, right and stop and not get too dinged up in the process and perhaps get some exercise.
All I have to say is SPRINGER! Love that invention, it's the best way to bike a dog. So much safer for you and the dog.
ReplyDeleteYou can get one at Dog Sport Gear, and even Costco.ca sells them now, just search for Springer.
Just looked it up - Awesome! I definitely need one of these. Probably way safer then my current situation. Thanks for the tip :-)
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the "Springer" yet but if Dieter is anything like Kato, it may be safer than trying to hold his leash in one hand and steer the bike with the other. Kato is doing pretty good, but if he sees a squirrel, or raccoon, or even a deer (happened last week) before I do, he pulls hard in their direction and over I go. Other than the odd mishaps the bike riding/dog jogging is a great way to go.
ReplyDeleteHope it works out for you.
